Terms of Use – WorkingBlind.ca and WorkingBlind.org

Last updated: December 2025

WorkingBlind.ca and WorkingBlind.org (together, “WorkingBlind” or “the site”) are run by BALANCE for Blind Adults (“BALANCE”, “we”, “our”, “us”).

By using this site in any way (for example, reading pages, downloading PDFs, or watching videos), you are agreeing to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree with these terms, please do not use the site.

1. What this site is for (and what it is not)

WorkingBlind is meant to provide general education and training about work and blindness or partial sight.

This means:

  • It is designed to share information and examples.
  • It is not tailored to your specific situation.

The site does not provide:

  • Legal advice
  • Employment or Human Resources (HR) advice
  • Medical, clinical, or rehabilitation advice
  • Professional advice about any individual person or workplace

You should always:

  • Follow the laws and policies that apply where you live and work
  • Follow your organization’s policies and procedures
  • Ask a qualified professional (for example, a lawyer, HR professional, or healthcare provider) for advice when you need it

The information on this site can help you ask better questions and understand issues, but it does not replace professional advice.

2. Who owns the content

In these Terms, “content” means everything you see, hear, or download from WorkingBlind, unless we clearly say otherwise.

This includes, for example:

  • Text on webpages
  • PDFs, guides, and tip sheets
  • Videos and audio
  • Diagrams, icons, and other graphics
  • The BALANCE for Blind Adults and WorkingBlind names and logos

Unless we clearly say otherwise, BALANCE for Blind Adults owns this content. That means we keep all legal rights to it, except for the limited use we give you in Section 3.

3. How you are allowed to use our content

We want our materials to be used to support learning and training, especially around hiring and including blind and partially sighted workers.

You are allowed to do all of the following without asking us first:

  • Download, copy, print, or share our webpages, PDFs, and videos
  • Use them in non-commercial education and training, such as:
    • Internal training for staff, Employment Service Providers, or other community agencies
    • Classroom use, workshops, and lunch-and-learns
    • Individual learning or self-study

When we say “non-commercial”, we mean:

  • You do not sell our content, and
  • You do not charge a fee specifically for access to our content

To use our content under this permission, you must:

  1. Not change the meaning
    • You can shorten or adapt for your context, but you must not change the message in a way that is wrong, misleading, or out of context.
  2. Keep important context
    • For example, if a paragraph explains limits or risks, you should not remove that part and present the rest as a complete picture.
  3. Give clear credit
    • You must clearly name BALANCE for Blind Adults and WorkingBlind as the source. For example:

“Adapted from materials created by BALANCE for Blind Adults on WorkingBlind.ca and WorkingBlind.org.”

This permission:

  • Applies only to our educational content (webpages, PDFs, videos, etc.), and
  • Does not give you any right to:
    • Use the BALANCE for Blind Adults or WorkingBlind names or logos in your own branding or marketing
    • Suggest that BALANCE is sponsoring, endorsing, or partnering with your organization, unless we have agreed to that separately

If you want to:

  • Use our content in a commercial way (for example, in a paid course or product),
  • Use our content as a major part of something you sell, or
  • Heavily rewrite, re-brand, or bundle our content as if it were your own,

you must first get written permission from BALANCE for Blind Adults.

4. No guarantees and limits on our responsibility

We work hard to keep the information on WorkingBlind:

  • Accurate
  • Up to date
  • Practical

However, we cannot promise that the content on this site will always be:

  • Complete
  • Fully current
  • Free of mistakes
  • Suitable for every person, organization, or workplace

Because of that:

  • You are responsible for how you choose to use the information.
  • You should always consider your own situation, laws, and policies before acting.

As much as the law allows:

  • BALANCE for Blind Adults is not responsible for any loss, harm, or damage that happens because you:
    • Use or rely on information from this site, or
    • Use tools, products, or services that we mention or link to

In simple terms: we provide information to help you. You are responsible for how you use it.

5. Links and references to other sites and tools

WorkingBlind may include links or references to:

  • Other websites
  • Tools, apps, or software
  • Products or services from other organizations

These links and references are:

  • Provided for your information only, and
  • Not a sign that we endorse or guarantee those organizations, tools, or services

We do not control third-party websites or services, and we are not responsible for:

  • Their content
  • Their accessibility
  • Their privacy or security practices
  • How they use personal information

Whenever you follow a link away from WorkingBlind, you should read that site’s own terms of use and privacy policy.

6. Privacy and personal information

If you share personal information with us (for example, through a contact form), our use of that information is described in our Privacy Policy.

By using WorkingBlind, you are also agreeing to the terms of our Privacy Policy.

7. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms of Use from time to time.

When we do:

  • We will change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
  • The new version will apply from the date it is posted.

If you keep using the site after we post updated Terms, that means you accept the new Terms.

8. Which laws apply

  • The laws of the Province of Ontario, and
  • The laws of Canada that apply in Ontario

If there is any dispute about these Terms or about your use of WorkingBlind, it will be handled in the courts of Ontario.
