About WorkingBlind

A Practical Resource Built to Answer Real Questions

WorkingBlind is an initiative of BALANCE for Blind Adults. It was created to help shift the employment landscape by building real-world understanding of how blind and partially sighted professionals work.

The project was designed to solve a clear problem: jobseekers, employment service agencies, and employers all told us they needed real examples of how blind and partially sighted professionals actually work. Not assumptions. Not theory. Context—the tools, workflows, and everyday practices that support success on the job.

WorkingBlind brings those examples together. Through short documentary-style videos, practical training, and clear resources, the site shows how blind and low vision professionals meet expectations, collaborate with teams, and use modern tools across a wide range of roles and sectors.

Why It Matters

When people can see how blind and partially sighted workers perform real tasks—not just hear that the work is possible—perceptions shift. Confidence grows. Opportunities open. WorkingBlind exists to change the employment landscape through knowledge building, giving everyone a clear understanding of how blind and partially sighted professionals work, collaborate, and use modern tools in everyday roles.

How It Came Together

WorkingBlind was developed with funding from the Ontario Government’s Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility EnAbling Change Grant, which supported both the video series and the development of this website. The foundation for this initiative grew out of BALANCE’s Pre-Employment Program, which supports blind and partially sighted jobseekers along with employment service agencies and is funded by United Way Greater Toronto.

We also collaborate with MentorAbility, a strategic partner that expands employment opportunities and employer engagement for jobseekers with disabilities.
